The water is pushed through a pre-filter that removes sediments, chlorine, dirt, scale, and rust. This step is crucial for protecting the reverse osmosis membrane from damage and preventing clogs. In other words, this step helps maximize the system’s lifespan. Pre-filters contain carbon, an element that is naturally very porous.
Pressure is then applied to the pre-filtered water to force it through the semipermeable membrane. The difference in pressure is necessary for the reverse osmosis process to occur.
The pressure drives the water through an extremely fine semipermeable membrane that retains impurities, dissolved minerals, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. Only water molecules are able to pass through the membrane.
The water that has passed through the membrane is collected in a storage tank and any excess minerals are flushed out. The result is water that is free of most contaminants and ready to be used for drinking, cooking, or household chores.
Before being used, the purified water passes through the coconut shell carbon post-filter located behind the tank. This eliminates any odour or residual taste to ensure the best possible water quality. This final step ensures that the water is not only pure, but also pleasant to drink.
