FAQ

Heat pumps

General

What are the differences between a heat pump and an air conditioner?

In addition to cooling your space in the summer, a heat pump can provide heat in the winter. An air conditioner only works a few months out of the year. A wall-mounted heat pump relies on the same principle as the air conditioner to transform the hot air outside into cool air during the summer months and turns cold air into hot air in the winter. It can therefore be used year-round because it reuses the energy of the cold outside to heat your home thereby lowering your electricity bill.

What’s the difference between a wall-mounted heat pump and a central heat pump?

A wall-mounted heat pump heats or cools specific areas without any need for ducts whereas a central heat pump distributes air through a ventilation network to ensure uniform comfort throughout your entire home. Wall-mounted models are easier to install and more flexible. Central heat pump models are better suited to large homes with an existing duct system.

What is a BTU/H?

The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a unit of heat that defines the quantity of heat necessary to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit at a constant pressure of one atmospheric unity.

How do I know how many BTUs are required to keep me comfortable?

To find out how many BTUs are required, calculate your surface area (length x width), multiply by 10 and round up to the corresponding number of BTUs. For instance, an area with 1,000 sq. ft. requires 12,000 BTUs.

Example: 26 ft x 38 ft = 988 sq. ft.
988 X 10 = 9,880 > rounded up = 10,000
Number of BTUs required = 12,000 (higher number)

What is a ton?

A ton, also referred to as tonnage, refers to the appliance’s heating or cooling capacity. One ton is equal to the power needed to cool or heat 12,000 BTUs per hour — or a 600-800 sq. ft. house (depending on insulation). Obviously, the bigger the house, the more tons are needed to maintain a comfortable temperature.

After the initial installation, can my heat pump be moved to another location?
Unfortunately, this is not possible because moving the heat pump could damage your home. If you want to move the heat pump despite the risks, HydroSolution will not be held liable for damages or costs incurred by this change. If you rent your heat pump, doing so will be considered a breach of your agreement and you will have to purchase your heat pump at its residual value. However, if you sell your home, you can transfer the lease agreement to the new owner by including a statement about the lease for the heat pump in the declaration of the seller and in the deed of sale.
What is the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)?

The energy-efficiency ratio (EER) corresponds to the efficiency of an air conditioner at 35 oC (outdoor) and 26 oC (indoor) with a humidity level of 50%. The higher the EER, the more efficient it is and as a result, the lower the energy consumption. A 1-point difference in the EER rating corresponds to approximately a 4% difference on the cost of electricity.

What is the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF)?

The heating seasonal performance factor corresponds to the efficiency of a heating system at 8 oC (outdoor) and 20 oC (indoor). The higher the HSPF, the more efficient it is and as a result, the lower the energy consumption. A 1-point difference in the HSPF rating corresponds to approximately an 8% difference on the cost of electricity.

What is the coefficient of performance (COP)?

This is the ratio between the energy consumed and the quantity of heat produced. The higher the COP, the more efficient it is in heating mode. A COP of 3 means the device will consume 1 KW/h to produce a heat output of KW/h.

What is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)?

This measures an air conditioner’s performance at 28 oC (outdoor) and 20 oC (indoor). The higher the SEER, the more efficient it is and as a result, the less energy it consumes. A 1-point difference in the SEER rating corresponds to approximately a 4% difference on the cost of electricity. This measure is not commonly used because it is assessed in variable conditions and is therefore less reliable than the EER rating.

What is Inverter technology?

Inverter technology modulates the heat pump in order to maintain a more constant temperature. The device can then reach the desired temperature more quickly while remaining constant by regulating the speed of the compressor. The motor therefore does not come to a full stop as often and the temperature remains more stable. This increases the lifespan of the device and results in lower costs.

What is Ultra Heat technology?

Thanks to Ultra Heat technology, a heat pump can efficiently provide heat even in very cold weather (down to -25°C or -30°C). The appliance uses an improved compressor, optimized refrigerant, and an intelligent defrosting system to maintain performance. As a result, you’ll enjoy heightened comfort without the need for additional heating. Plus, you’ll save money!

What is ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR is an internationally renowned certification system attesting to a product’s energy efficiency. A heat pump with this designation must reach a minimum SEER rating of 15, an EER rating of 12.5, and an HSPF of 8.5.

Wall-mouted heat pumps

What is the difference between a single-zone heat pump and a multi-zone heat pump?

A single-zone heat pump provides comfort year-round in a specific room. It comes with one indoor and one outdoor unit. The multi-zone wall-mounted heat pump provides comfort year-round in many rooms. It comes with several indoor units but only one outdoor unit. This model is perfect for homes with no ventilation ducts and more than one floor or several closed rooms. The multi-zone wall-mounted heat pump also takes up less space on an electric panel.

Is a single wall-mounted unit sufficient for a home with multiple levels?

That really depends on your home’s architecture, size, and layout. It also depends on the number of floors and closed rooms in comparison with open spaces. Our multi-zone models are designed to provide you with consistent comfort no matter the layout of your home. Our experts are available to help you pick the heat pump that meets your needs.
